Stepping Stones to Milestones: Empowering parents to be their child’s first teacher
After seeing the popularity of The Library’s Born to Read program for infants to 18 months, staff started looking at how they could help parents even more.

The answer is “Stepping Stones to Milestones,’’ which combines library programs with activities that parents can do at home, with explanations of how they promote development in the crucial early years of life.

“We designed it to help parents and caregivers be that first teacher for their child to get them ready for kindergarten,” says Youth Services Manager Hannah Killian. “We want people to think of storytimes as a place to go for learning, and to take those things we do in storytime and continue that learning at home.”

Parents engage their children in reading with 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge
The Library recently kicked off a new reading challenge -- 1000 Books Before Kindergarten – that helps parents create a daily reading habit with their children.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a national effort embraced by libraries and started to ensure children enter kindergarten and elementary school ready to learn. It fits with The Library’s goal to assist parents with the development of their young children.

How to participate: Visit dcls.org/1000books and register with Beanstack, the reading challenge software use to track completed books. Families can also get recommendations for their young one’s next read.

Friends of McCormick Riverfront and Madeline L. Olewine Memorial libraries join forces

After deciding it made sense to help both city-based libraries, a joint Friends group is forming to support both the McCormick Riverfront and the Madeline L. Olewine Memorial libraries.

“A really powerful Friends group can give the library the flexibility to try some new things by bringing in a lot of funds,” says Lisa Howald, manager of the McCormick Riverfront Library. “They can also help get the word out to people about all the tremendous resources we offer.”

McCormick Riverfront Library Manager,
Lisa Howald, with Friends members at Books & Brews in October.

The McCormick & Olewine Library Friends, a.k.a. MOLF, got its start last fall and is planning for the day when all The Library’s libraries open their doors.

Tom Boone, MOLF’s recording secretary, sees the group’s role as asking the  library manager: “What is it that you’re not getting anywhere else that we can give you?”

MOLF annual membership dues are $10 for individuals, $20 for households, and $50 for businesses. The Library makes it easy to learn more and to join a Friends group. Email Lisa Howald at lhowald@dcls.org to join this group and support your local library today!

Dr. John J. Sygielski, President and CEO, Harrisburg Area Community College credits his high school library with sparking his love of reading. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for librarians,” says “Ski,’’ as he’s widely known in the Harrisburg community. “They were my advisers. They were my research analysts. They were my supporters, my encouragers.”
